Rehabilitating Gait
To rehabilitate or adjust an inefficient gait, sensory stimulation within the normal receptive field in the thalamus and cortex must be given in coordination with the activity and firing pattern of the system. A firing pattern is the distinct program in which the modules of the sensory motor system are utilized, in a specific order and level of activation. To use an old analogy, it is not unlike a symphony. Each musician (module) has a role to play depending on the piece of music played. Fine adjustments are constantly being made (secondary to the individual immediate performances of the sections /modules) by the symphony conductor to the individual musicians or sections (modules) to maintain the same output. The thalamus coordinates what reaches the neocortex, increasing input when needed, filtering others to maintain representation to the cortex. The music quality and quantity must be maintained. The dampening of ground reaction forces during gait must be maintained.
